H2-based polymer membrane fuel cells, electrolysers and solar hydrogen generators are keycomponents in a sustainable hydrogen economy. In particular, alkaline membrane based devices arepromising alternatives to their acidic counterparts owing to the availability of earth-abundant metalcatalysts for the oxygen reactions, while such catalysts have not been reported for the hydrogenreactions. Moreover, previous research on the hydrogen oxidation/evolution reactions on the state-of-the-art Pt catalysts has shown significantly reduced kinetics in alkaline environment than in acids, which projects an increased Pt loading in alkaline membrane based devices, and impedes their largescale commercialization. In this talk, I will present the mechanistic study of the hydrogenoxidation/evolution kinetics of Pt in a full range of solution pH, especially in alkaline environment, andshow how fundamental understanding guides efficient catalyst design and development for thehydrogen reactions.
