? Introduction to the speaker :

?

Prof. Slater is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Regional Affairs in the University of Cambridge and is the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow and Donald Medal holder of the IChemE for outstanding services to the field of Biochemical Engineering. He was President of Fitzwilliam College in the University of Cambridge from 2009 to 2013. Professor Slater’s career has been in bio-manufacturing and biopharmaceutical development, the principal areas of focus of the BioScience Engineering Research Group at Cambridge. He has extensive experience of biopharmaceuticals and their development through to clinical testing and has held research management positions in industry and academia. He has authored 140 papers on aspects of bioprocessing in international journals and has been the principal investigator and lead researcher of over sixty research projects that have been funded by government and by industry.

Introduction to the lecture :


The lecture will describe the current research strategy in Healthcare Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and will explain how we are seeking to create innovation to fuel the growth of biotechnology industries in the region thorough partnership with companies that range from international pharmaceutical concerns to small university spin outs. Fuelling the Cambridge Phenomenon we seek to bridge the gap between academia and commerce by emphasising innovation at all levels of our educational process, from Masters students on our Bioscience Enterprise programme to senior researchers working at the leading edge of neuropsychiatric diagnosis. Examples will be presented of current research that spans the broad range of biotechnologies and the opportunities that these create for commercial technology exploitation.
