Abstract
Coinage metal (Au, Ag, Cu) nanoparticles show unique optical properties owing to their strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible range of light, which has enabled their broad use in applications including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and fluorescence, biosensing, imaging, therapeutics and catalysis. Since the plasmonic properties of the metal nanoparticles are highly dependent on their structures, our efforts have been focused on the rational design of these nanostructures and applications taking the advantage of their unique properties. In this presentation, I will first introduce a coordination-based strategy for controlled synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles. Then, our discussion will be focused on the structure engineering of these nanoparticles for combined plasmonic activity and chemical stability, by galvanic-replacement-free epitaxial growth of noble metal on less-stable metal nanostructures, as well as nonepitaxial growth of these metals against nonmetallic templates. Our approach of synthesis may open up new opportunities toward a variety of noble metal nanostructures for a broad range of applications.

Biography
Dr. Chuanbo Gao received his M.S. degree in 2006 and PhD degree in 2009 from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, under the mentorship of Prof. Shunai Che. From 2010 to 2012 he was a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Yadong Yin’s group at the University of California, Riverside. Since September of 2012, he has been an independent PI at Frontier Institute of Science and Technology, Xi’an Jiaotong University. His current interest of research is rational design of noble metal nanomaterials for analytical, catalytic and energy applications.
