Abstract: The unique chemistry of polyurethanes has lead them to becoming the most versatile industrial polymers that can be found in almost every aspect of our daily life. The talk will highlight the general building blocks and principles enabling the creation of various types of cellular and compact polyurethanes. To illustrate the innovation potential of polyurethane (PU) materials a couple of selected recent examples based on our R&D will be shown: PU rigid foam systems improve the thermal insulation of liquefied natural gas carriers thus reducing the gas boil-off rate during transport which leads to improved sustainability as well as increased economic efficiency for customers;? Infinergy?, the worldwide first expanded thermoplastic PU, yields the highest energy returns in shoe soles compared to established materials based on e.g. ethylene vinyl acetate; other possible applications for Infinergy? continue to be identified and include “unflattable” tires, protective equipment or flooring solutions; finally, SLENTITE? is the worldwide first nano-porous PU aerogel in the form of an open-porous and robust high-performance insulation panel for next-generation construction solutions.
