Abstract:
In response to rapid increasing energy storage demands of consuming electronics, electrical vehicles, electrical grids, and clean energy storage, there is an urgent call for advanced rechargeable batteries with superior energy storage performance compared to existing battery technologies. The presentation will cover our research efforts in developing new battery chemistry for sustainable and economical electrochemical energy storage. Through rational molecular engineering, we have designed and applied redox active molecules including viologen, ferrocene, and TEMPO for developing high performance aqueous and nonaqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs and NAORFBs). Particularly, the chemistry and battery performance of AORFBs will be discussed in detail. In addition, molecular chemistry of Mg electrolytes and their applications in developing high energy density Mg rechargeable batteries will also be presented. How chemistry plays crucial roles in developing new generation of rechargeable batteries will be emphasized..

Biography:
Dr. Tianbiao Liu received his PhD from Texas A&M University in 2009, served as staff scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory from 2013 to 2015, and currently is an assistant professor at Utah State University. His research is broadly spread on energy and green chemistry including electrocatalysis, electrochemical energy storage, and environmentally benign chemical transformations. Dr. Liu’s research has been recognized by a number of academic awards and honors. Recently, Dr. Liu was selected as 2017/2018 Research Corporation Scialog Fellow on Advanced Energy Storage, 2018 ChemComm Emerging Investigator, and received Utah Energy Triangle Faculty Award. 劉天驃教授,猶他州立大學(xué)化學(xué)與生物化學(xué)系助理教授,科研組網(wǎng)址www.tianbiaoliu.org。2009博士畢業(yè)于德州農(nóng)工大學(xué)化學(xué)系(Texas A&M University)。2013到2015在美國(guó)能源部太平洋西北國(guó)家實(shí)驗(yàn)室(Pacific Northwest National Laboratory)任職研究員。主要科研方向是能源轉(zhuǎn)化包括電池技術(shù)開(kāi)發(fā),光電催化化學(xué)燃料的轉(zhuǎn)化,以及環(huán)境友好催化有機(jī)合成。在相關(guān)領(lǐng)域發(fā)表科研論文47 篇和專利申請(qǐng)7項(xiàng)。劉天驃教授是新型有機(jī)液流電池和鎂離子電池的開(kāi)拓者,在電催化能源轉(zhuǎn)化方向也作出了一系列原創(chuàng)性的工作??蒲泄ぷ髟啻伟l(fā)表在Nature Chemistry, Chem, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Energy and Environmental Science, Angew. Chem. Int.
