Prof. Jonathan L. Sessler received a B.S.degree (with Highest Honors) in chemistry in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley. He obtained a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Stanford University in 1982 (supervisor: Professor James P. Collman). He was a NSFCNRS and NSFNATO Postdoctoral Fellow with Professor Jean-Marie Lehn at L\'Université Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg, France. He was then a JSPS Visiting Scientist in Professor Tabushi\'s group in Kyoto, Japan. In 1984, he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is currently the Doherty-Welch Chair. Dr. Sessler has authored or coauthored 750 research publications, of which over 145 are in the J. Am. Chem. Soc. (plus >30 in Angew. Chem. and 6 in Nature Chemistry). Dr. Sessler has coauthored two books, edited two others and been an inventor of record on over 75 issued U.S. Patents. Dr. Sessler’s work has been featured on more than 50 journal covers or frontpieces. His current Web of Science Hindex is 102. His work has been cited >33,000 times not counting self-citations.


Abstract
Prof. Jonathan L. Sessler’ group is working on new strategies for self-assembly. Systems whose study is relatively advanced are the so-called calix[n]pyrroles. These systems were first noted for their anion recognition features in the case of n = 4. In the case of strapped systems, ion pair binding and extraction is possible, as through-membrane transport of the chloride anion. The use of electron rich calix[4]pyrrole has permitted studies of self-assembly and switching. Here, anion binding serves to toggle the fundamental conformation of the core receptor, as it were, so as to control both ion recognition and self-assembly. This allows the production of monomers, capsules, and oligomers via the judicious choice of calix[4]pyrrole, anion, cation, solvent, and targeted substrate. It also permits control over charge transfer interactions and the construction of multi-state molecular logic devices. One of these has permitted inters-species \"chemical communication\".


Complementing the above work are studies involving a set of \"Texas-size\" box-like receptors. These relatively new systems are permitting the chemistry of self-assembly and information storage to be extended into the realm of soft materials. Applications in water purification and information coding are also being explored.
